Anne was visiting a former neighbor one day when he began reminiscing about Dahlonega
when he was growing up in the early years of the 20th century. His name was Vernon
Smith, son of Ben and Bessie Smith who in 1922 established the renowned hotel and
restaurant known as The Smith House. Vernon also told about his great-grandfather
Pasco, who came to Dahlonega from England to mine gold, and his grandmother who worked
at the United States Mint that operated from 1838 to 1861.
Anne Dismukes Amerson is a native of Dahlonega, a historic and picturesque town
located in the mountains of north Georgia. After graduating from Lumpkin County
High School in 1953, she entered North Georgia College, where her father was professor
of foreign languages. Shortly after graduation in 1956, Anne married fellow student
Hinton S. “Amos” Amerson (by now a 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Army) and enjoyed
seeing the world as a military wife. They returned to Dahlonega in 1979 following
Amos’ retirement from the military.
